The Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implants are one of the most efficient tooth replacement solutions and are a far better alternative than dentures that can easily slip out of place. Apart from replacing missing teeth, dental implants also help stimulate the jawbone and prevent bone loss.
The Step by Step Process of Placing Dental Implants
The dental implant placement procedure includes several steps, as follows:
- Initial Evaluation
At Alencar Family Dentistry, Dr. Jayme A. Oliveira Filho will first conduct a comprehensive examination to evaluate the condition of your jawbone and overall dental health. This initial assessment includes X-rays, taking impressions, and identifying the shade of your teeth to make your implant look as natural as possible.
- Tooth Extraction
If the tooth that needs replacing is not lost but decayed or damaged, Dr. O will remove it before proceeding. In some cases, the extraction can be performed on the same day as the dental implant.
- Bone Grafting
Bone grafting may become necessary when you do not have enough bone density to support the implant. It involves minor surgery where the extra bone mass is extracted from another area of the body or the jawbone itself and grafted at the site of the missing tooth.
The bone is allowed to heal completely before inserting the implant.
- Inserting the Dental Implant
This step consists of cutting the gum and drilling into the jawbone to place the titanium screw (the actual dental implant).
After the implant is placed, the surrounding tissues will begin to grow around it. This process may take a couple of weeks to months, depending on each individual.
- Abutment Placement
Once your implant has fused with the jawbone, Dr. O will attach an abutment that connects the implant to the crown.
The abutment has to be tightened so it stays in place when you eat. Sometimes the abutment can be placed simultaneously with the dental implant.
- Adding the Permanent Restoration
After your gums heal, the implant will be covered with a dental restoration appliance such as a crown. The crowns are made to match the shade of the existing natural teeth.
