Denture Care in Chesapeake, VA
If you use dentures, you must follow a dedicated routine to ensure that your artificial teeth are being taken good care of. Not sure what that entails?
At Alencar Family Dentistry, we always advise patients on how to care for their dental health and their dental appliances. Read on to learn about the best things you can do to ensure proper denture care.
How Should You Care for Your Full or Partial Dentures?
Here are the most important actions you can take to ensure the best denture care:
- Handle Your Dentures With Care
When cleaning the dentures, handle them with utmost care and avoid bending or damaging the plastic or the clasps.
- Brush Your Dentures Daily
Thoroughly clean your dentures every day with a soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner.
Gently brush them in circular motions with a little warm water to remove food, plaque, and other deposits. If you use denture adhesive, clean the grooves that fit against your gums to remove any remaining glue.
- Remove and Rinse Dentures After Eating
After each meal, you should run water over your dentures to eliminate food debris and other particles. You can also use a bowl to clean the dentures to avoid the risk of them slipping and breaking.
- Clean Your Mouth After Removing Your Dentures
Clean the tongue, cheeks, and palate of your mouth after removing the dentures. Make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and remove any remaining denture adhesive from your gums.
- Soak Dentures Overnight
For dentures to keep their shape, they have to be kept moist. So, put the dentures in water or a gentle denture-soaking solution overnight. It is generally advised to follow the manufacturer's instructions on cleaning and soaking solutions.
- Rinse Dentures Thoroughly in the Morning
Before putting dentures back in your mouth in the morning, rinse them thoroughly, especially if you use a denture-soaking solution. These solutions can contain certain chemicals that can cause vomiting, pain, or burns if swallowed.
- Plan Regular Dental Checkups
Schedule your dental visits regularly to have your dentures checked and cleaned professionally. Our dentist, Dr. Jayme A. Oliveira Filho, can help fit you with new dentures, fix your old ones, and examine the inside of your mouth to make sure it's healthy.
