If you are considering undergoing teeth straightening treatment with Invisalign, you probably know about how effective and convenient this method is. However, many patients still worry that Invisalign may affect the way they speak, as is the case with most oral appliances. Keep reading to learn more about what you should consider before starting an Invisalign treatment.

How Invisalign Affects Your Speech

The following is a brief review of Invisalign, including its effect on speech. When weighing the many choices you have for teeth straightening, it may be beneficial to go through the following information.

Invisalign Defined

Invisalign uses transparent aligners to straighten teeth. These aligners are removable oral appliances replaced every few weeks that gradually move the teeth into their correct positions over a treatment period of a few months to a year.

Invisalign can correct issues like crooked teeth, crowding, protrusion, and minor bite issues such as underbite, overbite, and crossbite. Additionally, Invisalign may be used for minor tooth gaps.

How Invisalign Affects Speech

As with most dental appliances, getting used to wearing Invisalign will take some adjustment. This may result in temporary discomfort and speech issues such as a little lisp or having difficulties pronouncing certain words properly. Dentists often encourage Invisalign patients to be patient during the adjustment period. The aligners will eventually become more comfortable and speech issues will subside.

Some patients may have speech difficulties for longer periods. In this case, the dentist can make additional adjustments to improve the aligners’ fit and the patient’s comfort.

Additional Information

While it’s natural to be concerned about Invisalign changing your speech, the main thing to remember is that any speech difficulties or discomfort is short-lived and the benefits of the treatment for your oral health far outweigh the negatives.

Our dentist is qualified to address any complications that may occur during Invisalign treatment and conduct a speech assessment prior to starting the treatment, which is why it is worthwhile to schedule a consultation.
